 photo IMG_6633_zpsnxwvgsx5.jpg

My favourite concept out of all Ramen Keisuke's concepts that I have tried. Came here on Tuesday evening to try some of the items in their new menu with Unnie. So glad to be going out and enjoying some comfort food after staying home for a few days as I was down with severe cold.

Koh Grill Sushi + Tai Cheong Bakery @ Orchard

  1. Koh Grill Sushi Bar
  2. Tai Cheong Bakery

Start off with my failed shopping attempt.

I actually wanted to get shoes because 1 pair of my shoes is giving way soon, and I have such bad luck I couldn't believe it. My colleague aka GFB (Grow-Fat-Buddy) have the same pair of Pazzion shoes and we wanted to get another pair of a different colour.

1) my mum said during the first lunar month, cannot buy shoes (due to superstition reason), so I planned 3 weeks ahead and chose a good date - 1st day of the 2nd lunar month. To our dismay, Pazzion closed at 5pm that day! So we left for dinner instead and I suggested having The Sushi Bar.

2) A few days back I noticed the hole in my shoe is getting bigger so I asked GFB out for a impromptu shoe shopping and quick dinner. Finally saw the shoes we wanted but the smallest size is 38. So i tried 2 other pairs and don't have my size. How annoying when you need to buy a decent pair right?

So I gave up and suggested Koh Grill for dinner and she said I'm a "sushi girl", it's like 10 out of 10 times of our dinner dates, I will suggest Japanese food. Introduced Shiok Maki to her and she loves it! Yay another Shiok Maki Kaki if I have cravings!

Soya Bean Hot Pot S$70
Tecchiri (Clear) S$70
Miso Hot Pot S$70

Many many evenings ago, we were here at the first-ever restaurant in Asia outside Japan, that specialises in fugu.

Fugu is pufferfish. If you don't know yet, pufferfish are actually poisonous, there are more than 100 species of puffer fish and only 20 of them are edible species. The most prestigious and delicious species is the Tora-Fugu, known as Tiger Puffer Fish.

You can rest assure that all fugu has their internal organs throughly removed in Japan before they are flown to Singapore. Singapore's AVA (Agri-food and Veterinary Authority) has their set of regulations so our gourmet experience is 100% safe. Not only that, Chef Koji Tsukamoto, the one and only licensed fugu chef in Singapore has over 20 years of experience working as a fugu chef.

Do you know that Shin-Sapporo Ramen change their menu seasonally? I don't.

Launched in 2010, Shin-Sapporo Ramen brings strong Japanese tradition and cultural heritage in one bowl of soup.

In every bowl of Shin-Sapporo Ramen, you will find a consistent smoothness of broth, a consistent texture of Ramen noodles, a consistent richness of Japanese tradition. Every bowl, a whole lot of effort for the preparation of a meal that comforts. Every bowl, a whole lot of heart for a little taste of Japanese culinary heritage.

Shin-Sapporo Ramen prides itself in being different from many other ramen shops. Noodles are freshly made in the shop daily and paired with its respective broths to achieve perfection in Japanese Ramen cuisine. Instead of using soup concentrates, Shin-Sapporo Ramen’s chefs painstakingly prepare their signature pork bone broth by boiling the bones over high heat for up to 15 hours.

Chabuton Singapore @ Tampines 1
Address: 10 Tampines Central 1 #02-09/10 Tampines 1 Singapore 529536
Tel: +65 68540335
Opening Hours: 11.30am to 10pm

In July this year, Chabuton opened its first outlet in Singapore at 313 Somerset!

MICHELIN STAR
Boasting a well-curated menu by an award-winning chef, Chabuton is the reason why a ramen trend has swept Bangkok & Japan. Consumers in Singapore can also savour the restaurant's high-quality and gratifying ramen! Chef Yasuji Morizumi is the first ramen chef to ever receive a Michelin star. All the ramen recipes featured on CHabuton's menu are created by Chef Yasuji Morizumi and was crowned the ''King of Ramen'' by TV Champion, a popular TV programme in Japan. All ingredients used are either imported from Japan or sourced or produced by companies specially appointed by the Japanese headquarter team.

JAPAN & THAILAND
The recipes used at Chabuton Singapore are the same as the other Chabuton outlets in Japan & Thailand. Chabuton is extremely popular in the 2 countries mentioned, with 9 outlets in Japan and 14 outlets were set up within 4 years in Thailand, making it one of the fastest growing ramen chains there.

CHEF YASUJI MORIZUMI
The chef's stellar career began back in 1980s where he started out working as a French chef, paying great attention to the intricate details of every dish. He combines his extensive experience of French Cuisine and traditional Japanese cuisine with his passion for giving guests a modern take on ramen that is authentic and simple and has a taste to remember. Chef Yasuji now uses his expertise to supervise Chabuton, through these ramen dishes, Chef Yasuji pays tribute to the simplicity and long heritage of Japanese cuisines.

GRAND OPENING

Three months after the opening of its first outlet at Somerset, Chabuton opens a 2nd outlet, this time right in the East at Tampines One and we got to meet Chef Yasuji on its grand opening day!

Now, even more Singapores can get to indulge in the award-winning ramen!

As yo know, things are getting more expensive here, inflation inflation inflation! I was surprised that I can still get ramen at S$12-S$13! Whenever K and myself went out for meals, spending S$60 is a norm. With S$60, it could get us 2 meals to Chabuton. YAY!

Kagami Biraki -  a ceremony where the Japanese will break open the wooden casks of Sake with mallets during major occasions like store openings, wedding and other celebrations.

 photo file_zpsb17e30d3.jpg

 photo file_zpsd93c0c01.jpg

We were all served sake in masu on the corridor of Tampines One. Its like a party and indeed something worth celebrating for!

 photo file_zps055abb90.jpg
MASU

Formerly, sake was sold by volume in a wooden box measuring cup, known as a mass which has a volume of 180 ml and was also used to drink.

In the past, the wooden box was said to complement the traditionally brewed sake, as it is brewed in a wooden cask but in modern times, the masu is shunned by sake purists because the wood affects the flavor of the sake. Furthermore, tradition requires the masu be filled to the rim as a sign of prosperity. Masu are now commonly made of lacquerware or even of ABS plastic. As the traditional sake-serving cup and a symbol of prosperity due to sharing the same pronunciation as the Japanese word for increase/proliferate, the masu is still used in modern times for the purpose of ceremony or to show generosity. In some Japanese restaurants, the server may put a glass inside the masu (or put the masu inside a saucer) and pour until the sake overflows and spills into the secondary container to symbolize this wealth.

HITOKUCHI GYOZA S$5 for 8 pieces

Bite into these dumplings served as a perfect side dish to Chabuton's ramen dishes. 1 side of the skin is pan fried until crispy, inside is soft & juicy pork meat filling and these are bite size too! Just pop the whole gyoza into your mouth, savour the gyoza and every single drop of juice!

 photo file_zps0620f289.jpg
CHABUTON TONKOTSU RAMEN S$11.90 for regular portion

The rich & creamy broth is the culmination of many hours of simmering pork bones. A slice of char siew rests atop the al dente ramen, japanese leek, bamboo shoots and white sesame are also added to enliven the overall taste.

You can have a say in how you want your ramen and broth to be prepared, from texture of noodles to how unctuous and salty you want the broth to be.

 photo file_zps53dad849.jpg

 photo file_zpsf1eef011.jpg
CHABUTON TONKOTSU RAMEN S$8.30 for junior portion

Foreground is the regular portion which you saw earlier on, the one behind is the junior portion, good for those who are small eaters, or those who want to order more side dishes but ramen is still a must-have, so a smaller portion to satisfy that craving.

Weekday Lunch Set is available from 11.30am to 5pm.

A junior Chabuton Tonkotsu Ramen + 1 side + Dessert + Beverage at only S$12.30!

 photo file_zpsf4d851e6.jpg
SOFT BOILED EGG S$3 ala carte

Chabuton's ramen don't come with eggs, but if you feel that egg is a must-have in your bowl of ramen, you can top up S$1 to enjoy these soft boiled egg.

The eggs that we were served are inconsistent, some are runny, some are almost hard boiled, however they are improving on this because to Japanese, eggs are just secondary. Most importantly is the ramen & the broth, don't you agree? Whats a good ramen when the ramen sucks but eggs are awesome right?

Apart from soft boiled eggs, you can also add on Buta Kakuni (pork belly) S$2.80 to your ramen. (Ala Carte Buta Kakuni S$6 / 2 pieces)

There are other toppings to your ramen such as:

Kara Kara S$1
Menma (Bamboo Shoot) S$1
Moyashi (Bean Spout) S$1
Piri Kara Negi Char Siew S$2
Shaki Nagi (Leek) S$1
Nori (Seaweed) S$1

 photo file_zpscc8d027d.jpg
CHABUTON KARA KARA RAMEN S$12.90

What you will get is the kara kara topped directly into the bowl of ramen. We requested them by the side.

Kara Kara is a homemade spicy minced meat, it enhances the flavour of the broth.

 photo file_zps7f6968a3.jpg

In my opinion, as Singaporeans, this is not spicy. I prefer the one without.

 photo file_zps8fbf62bb.jpg
SHOYU ZARU RAMEN S$10.50 / S$11.90

Thin-style cold ramen served with warm japanese soy dipping sauce.

There is an instruction card that comes with the ramen, telling us that after finishing the noodles, we can ask for Wari soup to pour into the Shoyu, and enjoy it as a soup.

I love the thin-style noodles, it has a chewy texture which I like.

 photo file_zpsd3650682.jpg

 photo file_zps2528534f.jpg

Left: Wari Soup
Right: Shoyu dipping sauce

Noodles: in our tummies!

 photo file_zps08dd9401.jpg

K do us the favour by pouring the Wari soup into the shoyu dipping sauce.

 photo file_zpsff749e87.jpg
CHABUTON MISO CHAR SIEW RAMEN S$15.90

Authentic Uki-Kouji miso flavoured pork bone soup ramen topped with extra char siew and japanese leek.

 photo file_zpseab3b5da.jpg
CHAR SIEW DON S$4

Torched char siew resting on pickled vegetables & smaller pieces of char siew in special sauce and rice.
This is found on the menu together with the sides and of course from the price, it is a mini don.

You can order a mini don and a junior ramen to make it a meal! Genius combination!

Love how the char siew taste like after torching, however as you rigged in further, its a little dry. It will be perfect if there is more sauce in the don!

 photo file_zps6571c59b.jpg

 photo file_zps4b29ee2c.jpg
IKA KARAGGE S$5 - fried squid

These squids are as good as I first tasted them in 313 outlet! Love the crispy batter that goes well with the fresh squids.

 photo file_zps4f7471e8.jpg
CHICKEN TATSUTA AGE S$5 - fried chicken

K almost finished the whole plate! Sweet and juicy piece of fried chicken. I think both squid & chicken are must-have sides.

 photo file_zps03d21359.jpg

 photo file_zpsb694822f.jpg
KAKI FRY S$6 - fried oyster

I am not an oyster person, but don't mind to try 1 or 2 pieces. I guess anything fried makes it better. I couldn't stop eating as the batter is so crispy, the oysters are fresh, they don't have a stinky metal kind of taste in your mouth.

 photo file_zps1012caa5.jpg
KONNYAKU JELLY S$2.50 for 2 pieces

Comes in flavours like apple, peach, lychee & grape.

 photo file_zps91557728.jpg
MATCHA ICE CREAM S$2.50

Comes in chocolate flavour as well.

I love strong matcha flavoured food/drinks, this is a little too mild for me though. But still a sweet treat after a wonderful meal!

 photo file_zps9f2d45d8.jpg

Thank you Chabuton for having us at your Grand Opening party of your 2nd outlet!

Miam Miam - I believe this is not a stranger name to all of you, is Yum Yum in French! A short introduction of Yum Yum Miam Miam before I introduce a game that is currently ongoing till 31st October 2014!

Miam Miam is a casual Artisanal French café-restaurant that brings together a mixture of French Artisanal Cuisine & Techniques with influences derived from traditional Japanese preparation & cooking arts.

Everything in Miam Miam is made from scratch, and all are very standardised.

Pastas were equally weighed at 120grams, ingredients too and the sauce is individually packed, to ensure a standardisation in all their food. Matcha latte were also whisked.

So after you placed an order, you may need to wait for 15-20 mins before your food arrive at your table because they cook with love.

 photo file_zps443b70a2.jpg

 photo file_zps081a616e.jpg

The decor here is simple and clean, very comfortable and cozy for diners. Every table has a call-bell which you can press to call for service. I love any restaurants with such technology.

Those without, sometimes no matter how we waved out to the staff when we were out eating, they still did not see us. *annoying*

PEANUT BUTTER & BANANA MILKSHAKE S$8.20

Creamy peanut butter and fresh banana, blended with milk. Or you can also opt for no peanut butter, which makes it Banana Milkshake. But don't do that because this is so creamy, thick and good. Peanut butter milkshake so far has never go wrong yet.

 photo file_zpsbb441192.jpg
MATCHA HOT CHOCOLATE S$7.80

Warming and slightly decadent, this drink is the perfect sweet treat for any time of the day. Sip slow and you can enjoy the creamy yet delicate flavour.

 photo file_zpsc8d07535.jpg

 photo file_zpsf75862d1.jpg
MATCHA SMOOTHIE WITH RED BEAN CREAM S$8.80

Matcha softee blended with their special matcha honey and ice, topped with a scoop of homemade red bean cream.

ICED MATCHA LATTE WITH MATCHA SOFTEE S$8.80

We find that the matcha latte is a little bland, we prefer the matcha smoothie with a heavier matcha taste!

 photo file_zps692f1d78.jpg
CLAM CHOWDER

Minestrone is also available. Ask their friendly staff to see what is bubbling for that day! Prices of soup from S$5.80 onwards.

 photo file_zpsa87348ab.jpg
RIZ AU CURRY S$15.50

Baked rice with homemade japanese curry, pork, frankfurters, broccoli, cheese & egg. Voted the favourite among my dining companion!

 photo file_zpse0d331da.jpg

 photo file_zpsbc44d5eb.jpg
MAC & CHEESE S$14.50

Oven-baked fresh pasta shells with Miam Miam's selection of 4 special cheeses with crunchy Japanese breadcrumbs. Not the usual Mac & Cheese out there.

 photo file_zps18de3bff.jpg

Don't expect to take a video porn of the cheese, because it is not how it look like. Not much of the ''cheese pulling'' out of the pot. It is a little dry to me, and I am not a very cheese person.

 photo file_zpsa33dcb29.jpg
MIAM MIAM SPAGHETTI S$15.80

My personal favourite! Miam Miam's all time favourite, sautéed with frankfurters, tomatoes, baby spinach and protein… bacon! Tossed with french butter and their secret broth & shoyu.

Couldn't stop eating this, and I cleaned up the plate, thanks to my dining companion who didn't eat much of the spinach, tomatoes & brinjals/egg plant. Lucky me. :P

Japanese style spaghetti is lighter and has cleaner flavours than in the west, thats why this is perfect for me!

 photo file_zps35b5d5c0.jpg
SOUFFLE AU CURRY S$15.50 (curry rice with fluffy cloud of egg, cream & cheese)
SOUFFLE DE NUAGE S$15.50 (tomato rice with fluffy cloud of egg, cream & cheese)

Souffle, yes and not a dessert this time! Its is rice topped with fluffy clouds of egg, cream and cheese.
And you get to choose from 2 different rice, the curry rice (the same curry as Riz Au Curry) & fresh tomato sautéed rice.

I would suggest this dish to be shared, as on twice occasions I had soufflé rice and I couldn't finish, halfway through, I felt that I already had enough. So why not order a few mains and share among your friends, you get to try everything too!

RIZ NOIR S$16.50

I am sorry I couldn't capture anything black/brown/yellowish. Have to make sure the egg is not too bright and the black rice can be seen.

It is actually Squid Ink Rice with Assorted Seafood & Omu Eggs. I think I am the only one who think that squid ink rice smells great! But after eating, I dare not open my mouth to talk or smile, to prevent myself from showing the black lips and teeth :X

Here come the much awaited desserts!

MIAM MIAM FRENCH TOAST S$9.80

I see that this is an absolute must-order for every table! Soft & fluffy toast sprinkled with icing sugar and topped with a dollop of cream.

Surprisingly the cream is not sweet or not overly sickening after a while. It is non fat, you have to give it a try.

CREAM CHEESE SOUFFLE PANCAKE S$10.80

The thickest pancake you can ever find. It has cubes of cream cheese inside this thick piece of pancake, it comes with caramel sauce and I would think that the pancake will be too dry without the sauce.

You may also choose to top up S$0.80/S$1.20 for whipped cream & vanilla softee respectively.

VALRHONA CHOCOLATE SOUFFLE S$13.80

Indulge in a true moment of ecstasy with heavenly decadent melted chocolate on top of your soufflé. Its a little sunken here as we took too long to snap pictures. Nonetheless, we enjoyed this sinful treat.

They have soufflés with matcha & vanilla too!
